FAQs For Plan Review
01
Are there any prerequisites?
No, there are no technical prerequisites required to take this class. We do not suggest someone with no plan review experience or Fire Department experience to take this class. Ideally, you have at least 2 to 3 years of full time Fire Inspector experience and actively plan review or will soon be tasked with the responsibility.
03
What do I need for class?
You will need a functioning laptop for class to use the online Fire and Building code as well as NFPA standards. If you prefer physical codes, you can bring your own copies of NFPA 13, NFPA 72, CBC, and the CFC. You will be provided with physical paper plans for assignments in class. Digital plans will also be available so if you have a program like Bluebeam installed that can also be used, but is not required. You will be shown how to download a free trial in class.
02
What is covered in the classes?
1A covers building plan review elements like fire rated construction, electrical, mechanical, and exiting as well as planning aspects like water supply and Fire Department access. 1B covers fire system review like sprinklers and fire alarm. 1C covers special hazard review like hazardous materials and other unique hazards.
04
How difficult will the class be?
The class will be challenging. There will be pre-class assignments that will be sent out a week before the start of class for students to work on prior to the start of class. This will allow students to work through some of the concepts that will be presented in class and help them identify their points of confusion so they can ask questions during class.
